Cinema has always been celebrated in India and the Bombay film industry is older than Hollywood. I see a dramatic love story rolled out to epic length. The fact that I don’t understand a word of Hindi only adds to the exoticism. Highlights are the elaborate dance interludes, partly shot in Switzerland. In these, mostly all the dreams, desires and feelings of the characters are expressed, with hundreds of colourful waving saris and wiggling turbans in the background. To get around the guardians of morality who forbid even kissing, the filmmakers have developed their own erotic language: especially the wet sari scenes, for which it may even rain in the middle of the house! Funnily enough, the villages shown in the film are completely clean.
